Victor Font has conceded victory in the Barcelona presidential elections, as early results show that Joan Laporta is set to claim an emphatic victory.
3Cat’s exit poll suggested that Laporta would extend his second term by winning 66% of the vote.
With 50% of the votes scrutinised and Font having picked up just 28% of those counted, the candidate appeared in front of the media to congratulate his opponent.
“I want to obviously start by congratulating Joan Laporta, the president-elect, for the victory,” he said.
“I’m thankful for the more than 40,000 socis i sociès who came out and showed the world that we are the best club in the world, and that we’re still lucky to be able to decide who leads this organisation.
“I also thank especially those who gave us support. We’re very thankful for the trust they placed in us.
“That said, it’s more than obvious that we didn’t get the result we were hoping for. That’s obvious.”
Turnout sat at 42.34% of eligible voters, sparking Font to reveal: “I want to remark that we’d have liked it if the participation was higher than it was.”
“It’s a shame but obviously we accept the result.
“Congratulations again to the president-elect Joan Laporta.”
