With the start of the new year, the transfer market has also opened in Europe, which will allow clubs across the continent to replenish their lines before the business end of the season. However, no new arrivals are expected at Barcelona, and any signings in January will depend only on their FFP situation and market options.
On the other hand, there can still be some changes in the Catalan team, mainly in terms of departures, and one player who is facing a highly uncertain future at the Blaugrana club is the goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen, even though he has now recovered from his back issues, for which he underwent surgery back in July.
With Joan Garcia now the established starter, the German shotstopper’s chances of making it to the World Cup with his national team are under threat, and thus, he needs to find a new team where he will be a fixed starter to maximize his chances.
Both the German national team coach and the German FA’s sporting director have already warned him that consistent minutes at club level are essential if he wants to secure his place in the squad for the tournament.
In this context, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona are willing to facilitate Ter Stegen’s departure during the January window, most likely on loan. Despite his high salary, the club is prepared to assume a significant portion of his wages to facilitate an exit, prioritizing the player’s sporting needs and long-term value.
Girona have emerged as a serious and concrete option. Michel’s side is actively looking for a goalkeeper after Dominik Livaković refused to play in the Copa del Rey in order to push through a loan move to Genoa. Girona’s interest is genuine, with Michel publicly praising Ter Stegen earlier this week, although the club can only cover around €1 million of the goalkeeper’s salary.
From Barcelona’s perspective, a move to Girona would be viewed positively. It would allow Ter Stegen to regain rhythm, rebuild confidence, and place himself back in the spotlight during a World Cup year. The idea would then be to reassess his future in the summer, once his sporting situation and market value are clearer.
