The Chelsea board are set to meet today to discuss the future of manager Enzo Maresca, who could be sacked before this weekend’s game against Manchester City.

Multiple reports claim that the Italian is on the brink of losing his job following a breakdown in his relationship with the club’s hierarchy.

Maresca was named Premier League Manager of the Month for November, but Chelsea only won two out of eight games in December.

The head coach caused consternation last month when, following their 2-0 win over Everton, he complained of the “worst 48 hours” he had experienced at the club and a lack of support, without providing specifics.

Maresca refused to do his media duties following Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, a result that drew boos from the home crowd. Illness was cited as the reason behind his post-match no-show, but journalist Ben Jacobs reported that he avoided the media because he is “in the middle of making a decision as he considers his options at the club”.

The Times report that Chelsea are set to hold “crisis talks” over the manager’s position, with the Guardian claiming that it is “highly likely” he leaves the club on Thursday.

Maresca “wants to leave the club but it is unclear if he is willing to walk away without a payoff”. He still has three-and-a-half years left to run on his contract, with the option for an additional year.

The former Leicester City boss was only recently linked with the City job as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola whenever the Catalan leaves Eastlands.
