FC Barcelona know they have a major task this summer to replace Robert Lewandowski. The ageing Pole is in the final year of his contract with the Catalan club, and a renewal does not appear to be on the cards.
Lewandowski has performed exceedingly well for Barcelona since his arrival from Bayern Munich four seasons ago. His performances have been of a very high level, but age is slowly catching up with him.
One striker Barcelona want to sign to replace Lewandowski is Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. However, Diego Simeone’s side is unlikely to do any favours for a league rival, and the club may be priced out of a move.
According to Fichajes, Barcelona are prepared to submit an offer of around €120 million to sign Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen should they fail to land Alvarez. The Nigerian is considered an alternative for the No. 9 role.
Having made a name for himself with his exploits at Napoli, Osimhen has spent the last couple of seasons in Turkey, where he simply cannot stop scoring. At 26, he is still young and has a long future in the game.
A physical presence in the Lewandowski mould, he is as close as Barcelona can get to the Pole’s profile. There is a case that he might be better suited to lead the line for Hansi Flick than Alvarez.
However, given Barcelona’s current situation, it is hard to see them making such a high offer for one player. The reported fee looks vastly exaggerated, and we will have to wait and see how things play out for Osimhen.
