Valencia host leaders and reigning champions Barcelona, who have nine points from nine under Hansi Flick and have looked formidable in attack. Before the trip, academy midfielder Brian Fariñas was registered with the first team on Tuesday in the final hours of the window. Gabriel Jesús has also been added to the squad, the Brazilian being the only new signing, although with little time to adapt he might not feature.

According to Superdeporte, Valencia have taken one point from meetings with Betis, Celta de Vigo and Deportivo, and optimism at Mestalla is limited. Their new face is Harvey Elliot, signed after the sporting department failed to land a number nine following Sadiq’s injury.

Fariñas had been close to leaving. Girona advanced a deal to buy 50% of his rights for around 1.5 million euros, but Flick asked for the move to be halted. Brian will wear the number four, which was vacant.

Working under Flick changed the picture. His performances in training surprised the coach, who quickly felt he could contribute to the first team, and the move was put aside.

He now faces the challenge of earning minutes in a crowded midfield. As a full first-team player, he is in the rotation and could get his first opportunity of the season at Mestalla on Sunday.
