Barcelona set for transfer windfall as midfielder nears Sporting CP move

Barcelona are hoping to raise significant funds over the course of the upcoming summer transfer window, as they seek to build a bank of money that can be used to bring in all of their required signings. They have already generated €3m from Inaki Pena’s move to Panathinaikos, and a further €11m will come in when Ansu Fati’s transfer to AS Monaco goes through – and another small pitch will soon arrive at the offices of Can Barca.

Seven years ago, Barcelona hold young midfielder Sergi Altimira to fellow Catalan club Sabadell. Four years later, he would move to Getafe and then Real Betis in the same summer, and it is in Andalusia that he has made his mark on Spanish football. He’s featured 110 times for Los Verdiblancos, although that number will not be added to as he’s about to leave for Sporting CP.

Altimira will join Sporting in a deal worth €22m (€18m fixed plus €4m in add-ons), and as per Marca, Barcelona will net a small fee, reported to be valued at €400k, from their training rights as part of the agreement.

Barcelona had previously considered re-signing Altimira

In the last 12 months, Altimira has attracted strong interest from many clubs across Europe, including those in the Premier League, but he will now make the trip to Portugal. Barcelona will welcome the training rights fee they are due, although had things played out differently, he could have been adorning the Blaugrana jersey instead.

Back in the 2023 when Sergio Busquets left Barcelona, Altimira was one of the players considered as a low-cost replacement for the legendary pivot. In the end, he went to Betis, while Barcelona opted to re-sign another of their former players in Oriol Romeu, whose short spell in Catalonia turned out to be far from successful.
