Although Barcelona may have failed to secure three points from their last game, one of the key highlights was how Hansi Flick tried to restructure his defence.

It was made clear that Flick didn’t like Barcelona’s defensive output in the first two matches of the season.

This is why the German tactician made widespread changes at the back, with Jules Kounde notably operating at centre-back after a year. He operated alongside Andreas Christensen in central defence, with Eric Garcia continuing at right-back.

While Pau Cubarsi was most likely rested, Flick’s decision to bench Araujo was perhaps unsurprising as the Uruguayan international has not been able to bring out his best so far.

Araujo considering Barcelona exit

Keeping that in mind, it appears Araujo could be asked to leave if the club captain fails to improve his performance, reports Mundo Deportivo.

This is part of Barcelona’s wide restructuring in defence, as the club look to add more quality to the backline and find players similar to Inigo Martinez.

The veteran’s shock exit appears to have made a huge dent in Barcelona’s backline, and the club are desperately looking into the market for a replacement.

Although Barcelona had immense faith in Araujo, the Uruguayan has failed to repay the faith and has struggled to offer that same level of consistency.

Keeping that in mind, the Catalans could ask Araujo to leave the club in the near future, especially if his performances do not improve.

The centre-back has a long-term contract that doesn’t expire until 2031. But given his value in the market, Barcelona may not find it difficult to attract suitors for the Uruguayan international.

Conversely, the player might himself ask to leave if he does not feel like he is getting the expected continuity in the team.
