Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has confirmed that he is giving consideration to utilising Eric García in midfield in the club’s next outing.

Stopper Eric was for his part pushed into a more advanced role for Barcelona’s meeting with Athletic Club over the weekend.

This came with both Frenkie de Jong and Pedri having been unavailable for selection.

And Eric, to his credit, went on to conjure up a stellar display, culminating in a standing ovation on the part of the Barcelona faithful.

This was not the first time that the former Manchester City man has been tested in midfield, but his more natural position, of course, comes at the back.

With Pedri ruled out of his side’s upcoming trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Champions League, the possibility of Eric continuing in the middle of the park was in turn put to Hansi Flick during his pre-match press conference on Monday.

And Barca’s headmaster refused to rule out as much, in explaining:

“Eric García’s position? It’s possible he plays in midfield again. We have several options in that position and Eric could be one of them. We’ll see tomorrow. He did very well against Athletic: he recovered a lot of balls and created chances. I’m very happy with him.”
