Although FC Barcelona did not have many transfer sagas to deal with in the summer, one player heavily linked with a move to Premier League giants Chelsea was Fermin Lopez. The Spanish attacking midfielder generated massive interest from the Blues.

Fermin, for his part, was very clear in his desire to stay and wear the Blaugrana, but Barcelona’s financial situation made a sale more realistic than it should have been. Ultimately, sense prevailed, and the 22-year-old was retained.

Fermin has kicked on and taken his game to the next level this season. The Spaniard has 7 seven goals and provided 4 assists in 12 appearances across all competitions. He has usurped Dani Olmo as Barcelona’s starting No. 10.

Despite being only the 11th player in terms of minutes played for the club, his influence on the scoreline is undeniable. He has already contributed 11 goal-influencing actions in 12 matches, five of them played in full.

Fermin celebrated a major milestone against Athletic Club at the weekend, making his 100th appearance for Barcelona. He marked the occasion with a goal and drew a foul that led to Oihan Sancet being sent off.

In just 66 minutes on the pitch, Fermin recorded 2 shots on target, 5 successful dribbles, and 7 ball recoveries, highlighting his ability to make a decisive impact even in limited time. The 22-year-old will be licking his lips ahead of the Chelsea fixture.

Chelsea’s interest last summer never truly reflected Fermín’s value. The Blues reportedly offered €40 million, a figure far below what Barcelona could reasonably have demanded for a player with his impact. Tonight, he will face the team that once sought him, confident and ready to shine at Stamford Bridge.
