FC Barcelona are dealing with a wave of injuries in the defensive department, especially in La Masia.

As reported recently, Xavi Espart, the Barça Atletic right-back who had become a regular fixture in the first-team dynamics, suffered an injury while away with the Spain U-19 national team. He is set to be out for 2-3 months in a bitter blow.

Landry Farre set for extended period out

Now, according to SPORT, another talented young right-back, Landry Farre, is expected to be out of action for close to four months.

Following the injury to Espart, Farre had emerged as a leading candidate to fill the supporting role on the right side of defence in the first-team setup under Hansi Flick.

The 18-year-old defender has already trained on several occasions with Flick’s first team. He has even been included in first-team squads, most recently in Milan for the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals last season.

However, he suffered a knee injury in the reserve derby against Espanyol B this past weekend. And tests have shown that Farre has damage to the internal ligament and, to a lesser extent, the external ligament. The cartilage has also been affected.

Nevertheless, the decision has been made to opt for conservative treatment rather than surgery. He will receive an injection in the affected area and is expected to be out for no more than four months.

This minor procedure is likely to take place as soon as Thursday. The earlier it begins, the sooner his recovery period can start.

This development leaves Barça Atletic manager Juliano Belletti with Joan Anaya as his only fully fit right-back in the reserves.

Meanwhile, Flick, for his part, called up Guillem Victor, Pau’s brother and starting right-back for Juvenil A, to first-team training on Tuesday.
