Barcelona still waiting to agree defender deal as 30th June deadline looms

By the end of this month, Barcelona are hoping to have finalised their second signing for Hansi Flick’s squad. Having already brought in Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, they want to finalise a deal for Racing Club de Santander defender Jorge Salinas, with whom they have already secured an agreement on personal terms.

Despite only being 19, Barcelona consider Salinas to be a very useful player for the first team. He’d be a left-sided option in central defender, while he can also play at left-back if required – which would be even more useful in the event that they fail to sign Joao Cancelo on a permanent basis, as is their plan for the summer.

Salinas is prioritising a move to Barcelona over the likes of Atletico Madrid and Villarreal, but a deal is not straightforward. There are doubts over the value of his release clause, which has led to failed talks between the Catalans and Racing. The newly-promoted side believe he is worth €16m, where those within Can Barca see the value of his clause as €8m.

This disagreement means that a deal has yet to be reached between Barcelona and Racing, as per Sport. The Catalans have been hoping to reduce the value of the deal by including a loan player in any agreement, but the two clubs are still arguing over the monetary value – and it means that time is running out.

Salinas clause will definitively increase on 1st July

For Barcelona especially, the clock is ticking. If they fail to reach an agreement before the 30th of June, it means that Racing can take a more hard-line stance, knowing that Salinas’ clause will definitely increase to €16m on the 1st of July, when they will officially be recognised as a La Liga club.

It remains to be seen whether Barcelona can get this one over the line in the coming days, but they will need to be quick.
