Barcelona summer signing suffers serious ankle injury after heavy challenge; possible fracture ruled out | OneFootball

Barcelona have been handed an early injury concern over summer signing Jesse Bisiwu after the winger was forced off just 10 minutes into the Copa Catalunya final with a painful left ankle problem.

Bisiwu went down after attempting to turn away from an opponent. 

Having received the ball, the Belgian tried to face his marker but appeared to land directly on the opponent’s heel, leaving him on the pitch in obvious discomfort.

What happened to Bisiwu?

It was an ugly challenge and one that left Bisiwu requiring immediate medical attention. The referee, unsurprisingly, gave Pipa, Sabadell’s right-back, a red card.

The Barcelona medical staff quickly assessed the winger before deciding that continuing would carry unnecessary risk. 

Bisiwu was substituted, leaving the field visibly sore and limping. The concern increased when he was later seen leaving the field on a stretcher.

According to SPORT, Barcelona are currently ruling out a fracture around Bisiwu’s ankle, providing some initial relief after the worrying scenes.

The 2026 summer signing did, though, leave on crutches in a support boot, so the club still needs more information before determining how serious the injury is.

Barcelona wait for further Jesse Bisiwu injury tests

Barça will wait until Thursday, which is today, to carry out new medical tests to establish the full extent of the problem. 

Those examinations should provide a clearer indication of whether Bisiwu is facing a short absence or something more significant.

Meanwhile, there was also one encouraging development later in the match, as Bisiwu returned to the pitch during the second half and watched the remainder of the game from the bench alongside his teammates.

The fact that he remained at the stadium, rather than requiring immediate treatment at a medical facility, has helped ease some of the initial concern.

Bisiwu has only recently arrived at the club and will be hoping to establish himself quickly, making an early setback frustrating regardless of the eventual diagnosis.

The initial indications are more reassuring than the stretcher suggested, but the club cannot draw any conclusions until the medical tests are completed.
