Barcelona will be left in a difficult situation if they are ultimately unable to prise Julian Alvarez away from Atletico Madrid. Their list of alternative targets has been cut down over the last few weeks, and one of the players that had been taken off is Fisnik Asllani.
Barcelona had identified Asllani as a low-cost replacement to Alvarez. The 24-year-old, who impressed for TSG Hoffenheim during the 2025-26 season, had prioritised a move to the Spotify Camp Nou, but despite being told that a deal could be done for around €29m, the Catalans never made any move towards bringing him in.
That allowed RB Leipzig to win in and win his signature. They agreed a deal with their fellow Bundesliga club, although it has now broken down at the 11th hour after the Kosovo international failed a medical, as confirmed by Hoffenheim themselves (via MD).
“TSG Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig were recently in talks about a potential transfer of Fisnik Asllani. This transfer will not take place due to medical concerns raised by RB Leipzig.”
The fact that RB Leipzig are no longer signing Asllani means that he is back on the market. Barcelona can now make a move for him if they see fit, although they will surely have concerns given that he has failed a medical at another club.
For now, the idea for Barcelona is to continue pushing towards a deal for Alvarez. They are still hoping that Atletico Madrid will relax their stance before the transfer window closes, although it does not appear that this will be the case – and if it is not, it opens the door for a possible move for Asllani, although that is still to be determined by head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco.
