In a recent development, journalist Jordi Cardero has revealed that Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, is already contemplating the future without Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
With the German’s age and recent injury raising concerns, Deco is actively looking into young goalkeeping talents across European leagues.
The reporter mentions that Deco has been closely monitoring the progress of several promising young goalkeepers for some time now.
Among these players are Mio Backhaus, who is currently with Werder Bremen but spent last season on loan at Dutch club Volendam. Another talent on Deco’s radar is Guillaume Restes, a goalkeeper who has established himself as a starter at Toulouse.

Additionally, Deco is considering Bart Verbruggen, born in 2002, from Brighton, who took over the role after Robert Sanchez’s departure. Diogo Costa, currently playing for Porto, is also on the list of potential replacements.
Despite the focus on scouting new talent, Barcelona are still satisfied with the performance of Inaki Pena, their current goalkeeper.
It is likely that the club will initiate contract discussions with Pena soon, as his current contract runs until 2026. This move reflects Barcelona’s commitment to securing a reliable goalkeeping option as they navigate this transitional period.
The urgency of these considerations has arisen due to Ter Stegen’s injury, which has led the club to think about their long-term options in goal.
Given the severity of the injury and the fact that Ter Stegen is above 30, Barcelona are preparing for a future that may not include the German international. Deco is reportedly taking a personal interest in this matter, ensuring that the club has a plan in place.
While there are promising options available within the club’s academy, Barcelona are not limiting their search for talents.
