Barcelona unwilling to exceed €6m as efforts continue to sign La Liga defender | OneFootball

Barcelona want to sign at least three new players before the summer transfer window closes in just over one month’s time. Joao Cancelo and a striker are the necessities, which they are also working to bring in Racing Club de Santander defender Jorge Salinas.

Last month, Barcelona tried – but failed – to sign Salinas when they argued that his release clause was €8m. Now, the 19-year-old is valued at €16m, although the Catalans have made it clear that they will overpay for a player that Hansi Flick is keen to add to his squad for the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Knowing that Salinas is desperate to join this summer, Barcelona are hoping to use this to agree a deal with Racing Club on their terms. As per MD, the plan is to pay €4-6m for the teenage defender, who is seen as more of a player for the future than present despite being liked by Flick and the rest of the sporting department.

Salinas would not have prominent first team role if signed

It is because Salinas is seen as an option for the future that Barcelona are not willing to exceed €6m. The teenager would still be part of the first team squad for the 2026-27 season if he was signed, although he would be behind the likes of Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen in the centre of defence, as well as Joao Cancelo (if signed) and Alejandro Balde at left-back.

It would be a major surprise if Racing Club allowed Salinas to join Barcelona for €6m, given they pushed so hard to stop him leaving for €8m only last month. However, they could be tempted to accept a reduced price if players were included as part of a deal, and the Catalans could send the likes of Xavi Espart or Toni Fernandez the other way (on loan).
