The future of ter Stegen remains one of the biggest unresolved issues at Barcelona this summer, as the club grow desperate to get rid of the German international.

Coming on the back of a loan spell at Girona, which was marred by his surgery, ter Stegen has failed to attract any solid offers, no thanks to his hefty salary that has ruled out most clubs.

Ajax had recently shown interest in ter Stegen, especially after the Dutch club roped in Michel as the new manager.

However, according to a report from SPORT, a move to Ajax appears far more complicated for ter Stegen at the moment.

The Dutch giants are not in a position to afford the German’s hefty wages. They are, instead, looking at other options and are, in fact, in advanced talks with Yann Sommer.

Sommer is a free agent this summer and has the same experience as ter Stegen. Interestingly, both of them are former Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeepers.

If the Sommer deal goes through, the door for ter Stegen to join Ajax will be closed.

What are Barcelona’s options?

Barcelona’s hands are currently tied, as far as the ter Stegen transfer saga is concerned.

The goalkeeper still has a long-term contract, and his salary is one of the highest in the squad, making him inaccessible to most clubs in Europe.

Therefore, the only possible way Barcelona can get rid of ter Stegen is to send him out on yet another loan deal while covering part of his salary, similar to the Girona deal.

Ter Stegen, for his part, has put out strict conditions for his departure. He will prioritise the well-being of his family and does not want to move to an exotic location.

Everything suggests he will prefer to remain in Spain, which is why the goalkeeper is planning to take part in Barcelona’s pre-season campaign and work on his fitness, before taking a decision on his career.
