FC Barcelona are working on a clear development plan for Guille Fernandez, with the club hoping to renew the young midfielder’s contract before arranging a loan that gives him regular senior football.

The 18-year-old is regarded as one of La Masia’s most promising midfield prospects, but Barca understand that his next step must involve meaningful minutes rather than another season spent moving between different levels.

According to SPORT, Guille’s current contract expires in 2027. Barcelona want to extend that agreement first and then find a club capable of offering him an important role.

The midfielder travelled with the first team during last summer’s pre-season, giving Hansi Flick an early opportunity to assess his qualities at close range.

Guille brings energy, forward movement and the ability to carry the ball through pressure. He is particularly dangerous when arriving from deeper areas, while his willingness to break lines gives him a different profile from a more conservative central midfielder.

Those qualities explain why Barcelona remain convinced of his long-term potential. However, competition for places in Flick’s midfield is intense, and occasional appearances may not be enough for his development at this stage.

A loan would allow him to adapt to the physical and tactical demands of senior football without severing his connection to Barca.

The destination will matter as much as the renewal

Renewing Guille’s contract should be the straightforward part. Choosing the right club will be the more important decision.

Barcelona need to avoid sending him somewhere that views him only as squad depth. The ideal destination would offer regular starts, a possession-based structure and a coach willing to trust a young midfielder through inevitable mistakes.

This is an area in which Barca’s loan planning has not always been consistent. A temporary move only works when the player returns with greater experience and confidence, not after spending a season watching from the bench.

Guille has the technical foundation to become a useful first-team player, but he now needs repetition, responsibility and competitive rhythm.

Protecting his contract before allowing him to leave is sensible business. More importantly, it shows that Barcelona still believe his future can be at Camp Nou once he is ready to compete for a genuine role.
