For the first time in years, Frenkie de Jong has emerged as a bona fide starter in Barcelona’s Gala XI, and while his quality was known for a long time, it is only now that he has found a stylistic fit as his niche.

His role under Hansi Flick has been absolutely paramount, and it comes as no surprise that Barcelona have been pressing for a contract renewal at the earliest. The player’s friction with his former manager, however, served as a roadblock and paralysed talks.

Now with the third captain changing his representative and the new agent Sebastian Ledure even meeting Joan Laporta earlier this week, everything appears to be on track to finalise and complete the key renewal.

Barcelona are in no hurry

As reported by SPORT in a recent report, there is a positive understanding between both parties to complete the renewal.

Concurrently, however, Barcelona are in no hurry to complete the formalities as they know it will take some time and effort to agree on mutually satisfying financial terms on the new deal.

As it stands, Barcelona will thus not push to complete the renewal before the end of the transfer window and will keep the operation on hold until after the window closes.

The report also brings to light that part of the reason why the Catalans are in no rush is because they don’t see De Jong’s renewal to be a necessity to register new signings.

Barcelona have other operations in place that can help clear the wage bill in that respect, and thus do not depend on him.

De Jong is eager to stay and compete for the Blaugrana crest for the years to come, especially after he has now become an undisputed member of the manager’s plans.

The 28-year-old midfielder is expected to sign a new deal until 2029, extending for three years and will likely even defer part of his wages over the new term to aid the club’s financial situation.
