Barcelona working on deal for Celta academy gem David Sueiro | OneFootball

FC Barcelona are looking set to have quite an ambitious summer transfer window this year, as they would try to strengthen several areas of their team. However, their plans for the first team have not made them forgetful of their academy, and the Catalans are seemingly also looking to bring some new, exciting players to replenish their youth ranks.

According to SPORT, one of the names currently being worked on is David Sueiro, a highly rated prospect from Celta Vigo. The 16-year-old midfielder is regarded as one of the standout players from the 2010 generation and is seen as the crown jewel of the Galician side’s academy, A Madroa.

Celta’s youth system has been gaining increasing recognition in recent years, largely thanks to the trust shown in young players by first-team coach Claudio Giráldez.

Sueiro’s development over the last few seasons has been particularly impressive. Despite still being of cadet age, he has already featured for both Juvenil B and Juvenil A, making 28 appearances across the two sides while also scoring twice.

He has also trained with Celta Fortuna. An international with Spain at the Under-16 level, the midfielder is known for his technical quality, elegance, and composure on the ball.

His journey to this stage has been steady but rapid. After starting out at EF Silleda and later playing for Xuventude Oroso, he joined Celta fully in the 2023/24 season. Since then, he has continued to progress quickly through the ranks and is now considered one of the most exciting young midfielders in Celta’s youth ranks.

Barcelona are not alone in their pursuit, as Real Madrid and other clubs are also keeping a close eye on his situation. Still, the Blaugranes could have an advantage as Sueiro is represented by Jorge Mendes and his agency Gestifute, with whom the Catalan club shares a strong relationship.

Even so, completing the deal will not be easy. Celta remain keen to hold on to their top talents and continue offering a pathway to the first team, something that could influence the player’s decision. The club’s recent reliance on academy players only strengthens their case to retain him.

There is also the possibility of a direct encounter between the two sides in the Copa de Campeones Juvenil, where both teams have reached the latter stages and could meet if they progress further.

Barcelona’s interest in Sueiro is real and forms part of their wider plan to strengthen La Masia with elite young players. However, the operation remains complicated for now, with the final decision expected to rest with the player.

A previous case involving Anwar Mediero, whose move from Celta to Barcelona created tension between the two clubs and did not work out as expected, serves as a reminder of how delicate such deals can be.

For now, Barcelona continue to push for the signing, but whether Sueiro chooses to stay in Vigo or make the move to La Masia is still uncertain.
