Ferran Torres emerged as an overnight hero in Spain after the Barcelona forward scored in extra-time in the World Cup final against Argentina.

Ferran’s goal helped Spain secure their second World Title. But the forward found himself on the spotlight when he wore a ‘Make Spain Great Again’ hat during the victory celebrations in Madrid.

The cap was interpreted as a playful nod to Trump’s well-known “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan, and it quickly became a topic of conversation across Spain.

With Torres yet to explain the gesture himself, he has received praise from none other than Trump himself.

Trump comes to Ferran’s defence

Asked about the matter during a press conference in Washington, Trump defended the Barcelona attacker, insisting the gesture had been made in good spirit.

“He’s a great player. He wore a (Make Spain Great Again) cap. It was a great gesture, and I think he did it in good faith. We appreciate that,” Trump said (h/t MARCA).

It was not a surprising statement Trump, although it is not known whether Ferran was supporting the Trump cause or mocking it.

All eyes on Ferran’s future

For now, a bigger talking point is Ferran Torres’ future at Barcelona, with his current deal at Camp Nou expiring at the end of next season.

Torres has been linked with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and surprisingly, Real Madrid, in recent weeks, although it is unlikely he will be joining Los Blancos.

He is, though, likely to leave Barcelona even as the Catalans are desperately looking for a new forward, having let go of Robert Lewandowski earlier in the summer.

Torres’ exit could leave Barcelona without any proper centre forward, which in turn, could force the Catalans to make an immediate move in the transfer market.

Atletico Madrid, though, remain keen on not allowing Julian Alvarez to join a direct rivals, which may force the club to look elsewhere for reinforcements.
