It has been a dismal few years for the Owls’ supporters, as the mismanagement of former owner Dejphon Chansiri left the club on the brink.

That resulted in Wednesday entering administration last season, with the points deductions that followed, combined with the state of the squad, meaning relegation was inevitable.

However, Arise Capital Partners completed their takeover of the club in May, and a remarkably busy transfer window means Wednesday went into the new campaign full of optimism.

Henrik Pedersen’s side picked up three points on the opening day thanks to goals from Callum Slattery and Jamal Lowe in what was a hard-fought game for the Owls.

The trip down south also gave Wednesday fans a chance to see Bannan back in their shirt, and, whilst he missed a sitter, it was an assured performance from the midfielder.

And, taking to his Instagram story, Bannan reacted to an image of the Sheffield Wednesday support, as he called them ‘amazing’, along with three applause emojis.

Wednesday were backed by a sell-out following of 1,250 who made the long journey, and there were even some fans pictured in nearby apartments watching on.

Sheffield Wednesday will need their fans if this season is to be a success

After watching their side lose most weeks last season, Wednesday fans will have enjoyed the club recording back-to-back victories to start the new campaign.

Given the size of the club, they are going to sell-out most away games this season, but it does deserve praise when you consider what they’ve been through.

So, the support will appreciate Bannan recognising their efforts, and the Scotsman is right to make a point of giving them credit.

Clearly, the supporters will be huge for Wednesday if they are to be successful this season, so it’s important that they are all pulling in the same direction.

The expectation that comes with playing for a club like Wednesday in League One can be difficult for some players to deal with, but that’s where senior pros like Bannan can be important on a day-to-day basis.

But, if things do go right, the fans will start going back to Hillsborough in big numbers, and the atmosphere they can generate will make it difficult for the opposition.

Ultimately, it’s down to Pedersen and the players to tap into that, and they’ve certainly got off to the best possible start on that front with the recent wins.

There will inevitably be bumps in the road, but if the fans can see a Wednesday side performing with passion and pride, they will get behind the group as they look to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt.
