Basílio hails Corinthians third kit honouring Tobias and the club’s goalkeepers | OneFootball

Corinthians idol Basílio has praised the club’s 2026 third shirt, which marks 50 years since the Invasão Corinthiana and pays tribute to goalkeeper Tobias and generations of the club’s keepers.

Launched in early September, the kit was first worn by the men’s and women’s goalkeepers in games against Fluminense and Bahia as a salute to Tobias, despite being designed for outfield players. Basílio spoke at a Nike event at Shopping Anália Franco, according to Central do Timão.

He said he liked the model and colour because of the nod to Tobias, recalled being at the 1976 semi-final defeat to Fluminense, and delivered the new shirt to the late keeper’s family. Above all, he welcomed the recognition of all goalkeepers, from Tobias and Jairo through to Cássio.

For Basílio, the release restores core elements of the club’s visual identity and helps preserve its history at Parque São Jorge, turning research work into a deserved acknowledgement of the great keepers’ legacy.

He also pointed to the Memorial’s archive, where historic images show the classic blue shirt with the Corinthians crest, viewing the new piece as a fitting homage.

Tobias, who died in 2024 aged 75, made 125 appearances for Corinthians, was first choice in the 1976 Brasileiro run that featured the Maracanã Invasão, and was in the 1977 Paulista-winning squad that ended a 23-year drought.

For this year’s collection, Nike themed the main white and black shirts around the Invasão, and the crest was reworked in reference to the 1940-1980 design by former player Francisco Rebolo.
