Union Berlin lost for the third time in a week with a 3-1 defeat away in Wolfsburg on matchday 13. Although their midweek cup exit wasn’t unexpected, provided they were facing Bayern Munich, losing to a team that had no home wins for eleven months is a huge setback for the capital city club.
"As a coach, I evaluate both the result and the performance,” said Steffen Baumgart in his post-match interview. “Looking at our performance, we played well despite conceding three goals. Nevertheless, the result is not good, and we now have three games in a row in which we have not achieved what we set out to do.”
Christopher Trimmel and Frederik Rønnow also shared their frustration with conceding three goals once again. “Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes today, which Wolfsburg consistently punished. But if we continue to believe in ourselves, we will win games again,” said the captain.
"Now, so soon after the final whistle, it's obviously a bitter feeling for us as a team. We know that we conceded the three goals too easily, and we need to defend better. Otherwise, we showed good character," added the Danish goalkeeper.
Baumgart finished his presser with a look to the next games against RB Leipzig and Köln. “We have to analyse it properly and reward ourselves again next time."
