The annual Supercup, which features the winners of the previous season’s two domestic titles in Germany, was officially renamed in honour of the late Beckenbauer in December 2024, with the first edition bearing the German football legend’s name to be played on Saturday, 16 August 2025.

The Kaiser’s boyhood club, Bayern, are set to compete for the Supercup for the 14th time following the one-off match’s reintroduction in 2010, after they reclaimed the Bundesliga title in 2024/25.

Opponents Stuttgart are contesting the Supercup for the second straight year, after losing the 2024 edition on penalties to double winners Bayer Leverkusen.

Sebastian Hoeneß led the Swabians to their fourth DFB Cup success by beating Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 in the final in Berlin at the end of May. The club lifted the Supercup in its previous guise in 1992.

While the precedent has often been for the cup winners to host the Supercup, this is not actually a rule. The DFL will announce the venue for 2025’s match in due course, following discussions with the two clubs.

The game will be played on the same weekend as the first round of the 2025/26 DFB Cup, meaning Bayern and Stuttgart will play their opening cup fixtures later in the month, on 19/20 August.

Bayern will kick off the new Bundesliga season on Friday, 22 August.
