FC Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga top match against TSG Hoffenheim 5:1. After the last two league games without a win, the record champions showed a clear reaction in the Allianz Arena. The result was clear in the end, although Hoffenheim kept the game open for a long time.
Vincent Kompany made three changes to his starting XI compared to the draw at Hamburger SV. Manuel Neuer returned in goal after recovering from illness, Jonathan Tah started in central defence in place of Minjae Kim, Luis Díaz came in for Lennart Karl in attack, Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović again formed the back two in the center and Harry Kane started up front.
Munich took control right from the start, but Hoffenheim did not hide and looked to get forward themselves early on. The game was decisively influenced after a quarter of an hour: Kevin Akpoguma was the last man to hold Luis Díaz in the penalty area, referee Tobias Stieler decided to award a penalty and showed the Hoffenheim man a red card. Harry Kane took responsibility and converted the spot-kick to give his side a 1:0 lead (20′).
The record champions subsequently missed further good opportunities, but TSG remained courageous despite being outnumbered, hitting the crossbar through Asllani and getting dangerously close to the Munich goal on several occasions.
The equalizer came after just over half an hour: Manuel Neuer made a momentous mistake in the build-up and Hoffenheim took full advantage. After winning the ball, Asllani crossed and Andrej Kramarić slotted home from close range to make it 1:1 (35′).
Bayern responded with increased intensity and things got heated again in the Hoffenheim penalty area shortly before the break: Díaz broke through on the left and was impetuously prevented from running on by Vladimír Coufal – Stieler again pointed to the spot. Kane remained ice-cold again and made it 2:1 with his second converted penalty (45′). The next goal had an immediate impact: After the visitors lost possession, Munich switched quickly, Kane drove the attack forward and fed Luis Díaz, who finished from 13 metres to make it 3:1 (45.+2).
After the break, the record champions controlled proceedings much more confidently. Hoffenheim continued to try to make their mark offensively, but now found little space. Bayern repeatedly created top-class chances themselves before the game was decided midway through the second half: After an attack down the right, Michael Olise crossed on the baseline and Díaz slotted home at the first post to make it 4:1 (62′).
Munich remained active in the final phase and pushed Hoffenheim deep into their own half. Lennart Karl repeatedly provided impetus down the right wing, while Díaz continued to be involved in almost every dangerous move. Bayern even had a fifth goal on the cards on several occasions, but were thwarted by a strong reaction from Oliver Baumann or the aluminium, among others. Vincent Kompany used the comfortable lead to make further changes, bringing on Jamal Musiala, Hiroki Ito, Konrad Laimer and Nicolas Jackson, among others – without changing the course of the game. Luis Diaz then made it 5:1 shortly before the end.
The win means FC Bayern have extended their lead at the top of the table and are now six points ahead of Borussia Dortmund on 54 points. Munich continue their DFB Cup campaign against RB Leipzig on Wednesday, then face SV Werder Bremen away in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Hoffenheim host SC Freiburg next Saturday.
