Bayern confirm João Palhinha departure to Benfica | OneFootball

João Palhinha has completed his return to Portugal, with Benfica signing the midfielder from Bayern Munich.

The 31-year-old Portugal international has joined the Lisbon club for an initial €14 million, with a further €5m available in bonuses. He has signed a contract running until 2030.

Palhinha returns to the city where his professional career began, although he came through the Sporting CP academy before establishing himself as one of Europe’s leading defensive midfielders.

The midfielder joined Bayern from Fulham in 2024 after impressing during his time in the Premier League. He won the Bundesliga during his first season in Germany, making 25 appearances in all competitions.

However, opportunities became harder to come by and Palhinha spent last season on loan at Tottenham.

With interest also reportedly coming from Aston Villa and Newcastle this summer, Benfica have now won the race for his signature, bringing the experienced midfielder back to his home country.
