Bayern Munich Dayot Upamecano has emerged as one of the best-performing defenders in the Bundesliga this season.
His contributions at the heart of Bavarians’ backline have helped them register the best defensive record in the league so far.
Upamecano’s contributions have not gone unnoticed either, with Real Madrid keeping a close eye on his situation, especially with his contract expiring at the end of the season.
However, Bayern Munich are expected to make things difficult for Real Madrid and their goal of signing the Frenchman on a Bosman deal next year.
In a recent interview with BILD (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that the club are in talks with Upamecano over a contract extension.
Eberl also admitted that Bayern Munich would love to keep him beyond 2026, and that he will be treated as an ‘internal star signing’.

“Upamecano is one of the best defenders in the world. We would like to keep him at the peak of his career as internal star signing,” he said.
Eberl added that Bayern Munich are in talks with the former RB Leipzig defender, even claiming that the player is happy with the club’s project.
“We are still talking. I believe I can sense that Upa feels very comfortable with the path we have chosen,” he added.
Eberl’s comments are nothing but an open request from Bayern Munich to Upamecano to extend his contract and play a key role in Vincent Kompany’s exciting project.
However, Upamecano will be aware that Real Madrid are also looking for a new central defender, as they look to eventually part ways with Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba.
Interestingly, Bayern director Christoph Freund recently commented on Alaba, notably heaping praise on the Austrian’s leadership. But when asked about a potential return to Bayern, he played down any speculation.
