Links between Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona ace Jules Kounde appeared out of the blue earlier this week, and the German club were said to be interested in signing the French full-back this summer.

In fact, it was even claimed that the Bavarians contacted the player’s representatives to discuss his contractual situation and enquire about his availability.

After all, Kounde’s performances at Barcelona have been on a dip in recent times, and while the club has not labelled him as a candidate to leave, they would not be opposed to negotiating if the right offer arrives.

Wide of the mark

Now, as reported by Florian Plettenberg, the rumours linking Kounde to Bayern Munich are wide of the mark and could not be further away from reality.

As matters stand, there are no talks, negotiations or even contacts between the two parties and the Germans are not considering Kounde as a transfer target for them this summer.

There is no doubt that matters might change as the window progresses. He is currently not a target, however, and it remains to be seen if the Bavarians change their stance.

Barcelona’s current position

Despite starting his career as a centre-back, Jules Kounde quickly adapted to the role of a right-back after his move to Barcelona and currently plays in that position for both club and country.

He has slowly but surely established his name as one of the best players in the world in his position. He may still have his lacunae, but the fact remains that he is indispensable for Hansi Flick’s Barcelona and Didier Deschamps’ France.

What is also clear, however, is that the player is no longer as consistent and reliable as he once was. Kounde’s concentration lapses and moments of disconnection from the dynamics have cost Barcelona dearly before, and the club is aware of the same.

As matters stand, the player does not intend to leave Barcelona, nor do the club consider him a top candidate on the departure front.

There was talk of possible negotiations if the right offer arrives, but Kounde’s strong performances at the World Cup and the lack of quality replacements on the market make it highly unlikely for the Catalans to consider the possibility.
