Bayern Munich starlet Lukas Mai has given an insight into the influence of head coach Hansi Flick.

Mai made his Bundesliga debut under Jupp Heynckes towards the end of the 2017/18 season but the 19-year-old has so far made just one other senior appearance for the club.

However, the defender has been named on the bench on a number of occasions since Flick took over from Niko Kovac in December, and the youngster recently signed a new contract which will keep him at the club until 2022.

“I’ve got a really good rapport with Hansi Flick,” Mai told German outlet SportBild.

“He talks to us a lot, gives me a lot of tips and helps me to always get the best out of myself.”

Injuries to Lucas Hernandez, Niklas Süle and Javi Martinez, along with the potential transfer of Jérôme Boateng, means more first-team opportunities could soon be coming Mai’s way, and he is expected to be included in the matchday squad when Bayern travel to face Hertha BSC on 19 January.

“I’m trying every day to give my best in training, and learn from all the experienced players around me,” he added.

“Since making my debut under Jupp Heynckes, it’s long been my goal to play as many games as possible for the first team and win titles.

“There’s no better place for me to be than at Bayern.”
