Bayern own goal? Eberl debate sends delicate signal to Müller and Co.

The discussions surrounding Max Eberl at FC Bayern go far beyond an ordinary leadership debate, as the public criticism of the sporting director sends out a signal – also to potential future leaders such as Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger or Thomas Müller

It was an image with symbolic power: while FC Bayern celebrated their cup win and the double in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, a scene emerged in the VIP stand that many observers are likely to remember: Uli Hoeneß with dark glasses directly behind a visibly tense Max Eberl

In sporting terms, Harry Kane dominated the final against Stuttgart with his treble, but in public the debate about Eberl’s future overshadowed almost everything

It was triggered by Hoeneß’s statements, with the honorary president estimating the chances of the sporting director extending his contract beyond 2027 at „60 to 40“ – while also confirming that there were „still doubts“

Eberl appears shocked and resigned

The statements came at the worst possible time for Eberl: just a few hours before the cup final, the sporting director suddenly had to turn his attention to his own future instead of the sporting highlight of the season

After the 3-0 win against Stuttgart, the 52-year-old reacted unusually openly. Eberl spoke of surprise and clearly stated that he found the timing of the statements „not right“

Above all, however, his appearance gave the impression that a certain distance seems to have long since developed between the club management and the sporting director

Bayern sends out a problematic signal

This is precisely the explosive nature of the current situation, as the Eberl affair is being watched very closely both internally and externally – especially by former Bayern players who could take on a management role themselves at some point

The past shows a clear pattern: Christian Nerlinger, Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn all started in their roles with a great deal of trust and Bayern DNA. However, they were all replaced in the end

Partly for sporting reasons, partly due to internal power struggles and political tensions

It is precisely for this reason that the current development should also be registered by personalities such as Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Müller

Because the central question is: how attractive is a top job at FC Bayern really still when even deserving former players and long-standing club figures are regularly caught between sporting pressure, public criticism and internal power struggles?

While the appeal of such a position remains enormous, there is also a growing impression that it is almost impossible to please all decision-makers at Säbener Straße in the long term

The question of power remains unresolved

In sporting terms, FC Bayern is currently delivering results: the championship, cup win and the development under Vincent Kompany clearly speak for the path taken

But behind the scenes, the question of power still seems to be unresolved. Uli Hoeneß, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Jan-Christian Dreesen, Christoph Freund and Max Eberl – many influencing factors are coming together

This should be an important observation for potential candidates from the Bayern family, as the Eberl debate shows once again that sporting success alone is not enough to make FC Bayern unassailable in the long term.
