Benfica remain interested in signing João Palhinha, with Aston Villa understood to have agreed personal terms, but there is still no agreement between the clubs.

Record reports that Bayern have rejected a loan offer from the Birmingham side and want a permanent sale, a stance that has given Benfica some encouragement.

Bayern’s position reflects that Palhinha is not in Vincent Kompany’s plans. The club are looking for a definitive solution for the Portugal international, who returned after a spell at Fulham.

Benfica would prefer a loan, which could ease any move, but they are not ruling out significant investment and are prepared to go to €25 million.

Marco Silva has Manu Silva and Enzo Barrenechea for the role, although adding a defensive midfielder remains on the table. Asked about Palhinha, Rui Costa declined to give details and said the squad will not remain as it is and that there will be departures before the end of August.
