When FC Bayern meet Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals of the Champions League, it will be about far more than just two big names. It will be a clash of two playing philosophies – and above all a system that has become Munich’s identity under Vincent Kompany: uncompromising man-to-man defending combined with extremely high pressing
The last meeting in Paris showed that this approach can also work at the very highest level. The 2:1 victory at the Parc des Princes was not only a prestigious win, but also proof that Bayern can be dominant even against top teams. At the same time, however, the game also revealed the risks of this system – especially when the opposition exploit the spaces behind the high-sided defence
Dayot Upamecano will once again play a central role. Under Kompany, the centre-back has become the prototype of the aggressive forward defender. His task will be to put players like João Neves under pressure early on and nip long balls in the bud
Alongside him, Jonathan Tah brings the necessary stability to the game. The international is a little more conservative, but will be called upon time and again to move out of the chain against Ousmane Dembélé. Dembélé in particular has developed into a complete attacking player under Luis Enrique, who not only provides pace, but also works in pressing and is dangerous on goal
It will also be intense on the flanks. Konrad Laimer meets Désiré Doué – a duel that could hardly be more different. While Laimer stands for aggression and running power, Doué brings technique and creativity to the game. On the other side, Josip Stanisic will have to deal with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, currently one of the most dangerous dribblers in Europe

The game could be decided in the center, where Joshua Kimmich meets Vitinha – two players who play a key role in determining the tempo and structure of their teams. While Kimmich acts as the driving force and pressing trigger in Bayern’s game, Vitinha is the calm pacemaker at PSG, who directs the game with his overview and passing quality
Kimmich is supported by Aleksandar Pavlovic, who has developed into an important building block under Kompany. The young midfielder brings calm to the game, but has to hold his own against the dynamism of Warren Zaïre-Emery, whose athleticism and mobility cause constant unrest
There will also be high-class duels in attack, with Michael Olise coming up against Nuno Mendes – two players with tremendous speed and technique. At the other end, Luis Díaz will try to tie down Achraf Hakimi defensively, while Jamal Musiala will be up against Willian Pacho
In the center, the focus will once again be on Harry Kane. The Englishman is not only an enforcer, but also a link-up man and key player in Bayern’s attacking play. Against PSG captain Marquinhos, he will constantly look for new spaces and try to take control of the game
In the end, that could make all the difference, because as much as this duel is characterised by individual qualities, the decisive factor will be which team is better at winning the many one-on-one situations. Or to put it another way: whoever wins the duels wins the game.
