Now FC Bayern too have suffered a setback. The dominant table-toppers surprisingly slipped to their first Bundesliga defeat against FC Augsburg last weekend. After going unbeaten in 27 Bundesliga matches, the Munich men found themselves empty-handed again. However, the setback is little more than a blemish on the outstanding season Vincent Kompany’s men have enjoyed so far – if Bayern can quickly return to winning ways in the Bundesliga. They still have some impressive runs to keep up, after all – as our look at the facts ahead of the clash shows.
The Bavarians have consistently taken something from their away trips since the 2-1 defeat at FSV Mainz in December 2024, winning 14 and drawing four matches. FCB have only enjoyed two longer runs in the Bundesliga: about 40 years ago (from 1985 to 1987), they went unbeaten in 26 matches on the road and in 33 games away from home from 2012 to 2014. FCB’s yield on foreign soil has been near-perfect so far this season. The German record champions have taken 25 of a possible 27 points from nine matches, equalling their own record from 2012/13. Another record: they’ve scored two or more goals in all of their last 13 Bundesliga away matches – a first in the competition.
But the next challenge on the road will be tough. Hamburg have picked up 15 of a possible 18 points at home so far. They’re unbeaten in five Bundesliga games at the Volksparkstadion (two victories, three draws) and have scored 13 of their 17 goals at home.
The fixture has been a one-sided affair in recent years, with Bayern going unbeaten in 20 competitive matches in a row (17 wins, three draws) since the 2-0 defeat to HSV in September 2009. The Munich men have won all of their last nine encounters, scoring 39 goals and conceding two. The German record champions have only celebrated more Bundesliga victories over VfB Stuttgart (72) than Hamburger SV (66). No team has scored as many goals against one club than FCB against HSV (252) in the history of the competition.
And another fact favours Vincent Kompany’s men on Saturday: Bayern have won 14 of their last 15 encounters with promoted sides, the only setback being the 3-2 defeat to Heidenheim in April 2024.
As a newly promoted team, HSV are actually doing well this season, but in terms of putting in the legwork, the northern Germans are miles behind the league leaders - or almost ten kilometres. While the table-toppers from Munich cover an average of almost 124 kilometres in 90 minutes, the most in the league, Hamburg are at the bottom of the ranking with an average of 115 kilometres per match. HSV have also made the fewest intensive runs in the league (an average of 619 per game, with Bayern in second place with 711). So Merlin Polzin's side will have to step up a gear on Saturday if they're not to be overrun by FCB.
Michael Olise set up Bayern's opener against Augsburg, his 14th assist in the Bundesliga this season. That's the best stats in Europe's top five leagues. Delivering one more would equal his tally from the whole of last season (15). Since data recording began in 2004/05, only Thomas Müller recorded more assists after 19 matchdays, in 2021/22 (16).
The Frenchman is also chasing his own record from last season, when he delivered an assist in five consecutive Bundesliga games from April to May 2025 - he's currently on four in a row. In total, the 24-year-old has been involved in 24 goals this season (ten goals, 14 assists) - and is now just one behind top scorer Harry Kane (25).
If he plays in Hamburg, Hiroki Ito will make his 100th Bundesliga appearance. He made 85 for VfB Stuttgart in the top flight and is on 14 for Bayern. Last week he scored his first goal for FCB in the Bundesliga, equalling his tally from his time at Stuttgart.
