Nizaar Kinsella’s piece about Enzo Fernandez’s future at Chelsea has some interesting lines about the future of other players at the club.
Enzo is pushing to leave, but may be placated with a new contract. However, he’s not the only one who wants improved terms. Chelsea’s structure of keeping their young stars on very long, heavily incentivised deals means that guys are pushing for better contracts the moment they’re established.
Moises Caicedo was just tied down to a new deal, rewarding his loyalty when linked with moves away. According to Kinsella, “Fernandez is among several players seeking improved terms at Stamford Bridge, alongside [Levi] Colwill and Malo Gusto.”
Both are certainly underpaid relative to their number of appearances in the Premier League. Gusto has proved himself to be a really useful squad player in his time at the club, and Colwill’s importance to the team has only become more clear after his time out injured.
We would expect both to get new deals before the end of this year at the very latest.
Enzo’s push for a new contract is putting Chelsea in a tricky position over whether to cut their losses and sell him this summer.
Liam Rosenior denied there were any tensions in the dressing room over Enzo’s attempts to leave.
Rosenior was quite defensive in his take on the lack of “belief” being showed by his players. It’s not entirely convincing.
