Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Tuesday’s news on Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.
News broke from Germany that Newcastle United had seen their opening offer of £69.5m (€80m) turned down by Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike.
This followed up later on Tuesday by David Ornstein of The Athletic revealing;
‘Liverpool have made an approach to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. The Merseyside club say no formal offer has been submitted as they are well aware Newcastle’s stance has always been that Isak is not for sale. However, they have communicated their interest to do a deal in the region of £120million.’
All of the more reliable NUFC media however, confirming that the intention of Eddie Howe and Newcastle United is to sign Hugo Ekitike to play WITH Alexander Isak, not to be his replacement.
Responding to Tuesday’s events/reporting, the comments from visitors on BBC Sport especially intriguing…
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Liverpool fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:
‘I’ll be honest, I think it was always Newcastle’s plan to have both Isaac and Ekitike.’
‘And the media’s plan to try and stop it lol. However they will fail.’
‘Unfortunately the only thing that matters these days is what the player wants. Player power is king. The good news is Isak seems a grounded lad and it would make sense for him personally to stay there for another 1-2 years anyway. Or even see out the 3rd year and earn himself a huge signing on fee.’
‘Na he’s off to Liverpool.’
‘Difficult to see why Newcastle would be looking to spend so much money on an Izak copy, if they think he’s going to be around next season.’
‘It’s called strengthening a squad that has been threadbare for years.’
‘As a Newcastle fan I am just amused by the outright fear of the Media and the privileged 6 clubs about letting anyone in to their cosy cartel. First they change the rules, second jump in with higher salaries to anyone we scout and thirdly use the tame London/Salford journalists to stir up trouble. Isak’s going nowhere.’
‘How dare a team outside the cartel challenge them!’
‘You’re not long in the Premier League and are artificially climbing above clubs who have worked harder and done it the right way so a bit of self awareness would not go amiss.’
‘Every single member of the cartel without exception have bought their success both during the Premier League and before it. Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool and Chelsea success is largely because they have spent big, won things, and then reinforced by further spending. There is no other “right way”. Its all about spending. And Toon have been in Premier League for most of its existence, so behave.’
‘Newcastle were around and had success way before most of the clubs currently in the Premier League. Oh and worked hard and done it the right way, well that immediately discounts Manchester City and Chelsea.’
‘As a long life Liverpool fan,,,,, 60 years plus ,isak is a OK player ,but nowhere near good enough for Liverpool.’
‘As neither a Liverpool or Newcastle fan, you’re talking complete hogwash. Isak is world class. A seriously good striker who makes Nunez look like a donkey. That’s why Liverpool are interested in him. They need to upgrade Nunez, and unfortunately now replace Jota as well. Diaz also looks to be angling for a move away. You’d be over the moon if Isak signed for Liverpool.’
‘Liverpool were funded by Littlewoods in their greatest era – this nonsense about earning what you spend is so artificial and untrue. The cartel stole their income from the 72 clubs when THEY created the PL.’
‘Issak to liverpool. Liverpools already put a 130m bid in.’
‘As a Leicester fan Our ONLY hope is bargains & Players coming through Academy, Rudkin has lost £225m on Players walking after Contracts run down..Glad if Newcastle break into the Cartel be Warned Corrupt FA have NEVER forgiven Foxes for their Premiership win nearly a decade ago!’
‘You Geordies are obsessed with this ‘cartel’ nonsense, you sound paranoid.’
‘Should be looking at the likes of Cheatski who had a £2 billion debt written off by Putin’s mate with no questions asked and who sell their own assets to themselves. If there should be anyone kicked out it’s the arrogant cockneys who seem to have the authorities frightened of them. Everton, Forest and any other club would’ve been relegated.’
‘lol.. wayaye pal say goodbye. Isak supports Liverpool all his life.’
‘You live in dream world if you think liverpool have ever bought success.’
‘With all those home grown players like Dalglish, Keegan, Hansen, etc’
‘I doubt Isak will be interested in sticking with Newcastle and playing the terror ball they play with the thugs just kicking people. They should free him to play for a team that plays actual football.’
‘These new psr rules are in place to keep the entitled six with an advantage, good luck to anyway to break the monopoly, be it the toon, forest or villa having the audacity of having owners with big pockets.’
‘Don’t include Man City in that 6.
As a City fan more than happy to see Newcastle progress. Hopefully helping to push Man Utd into oblivion, or at least League 1.’
‘Long known Liverpool are keen on Isak. They have the money, they have the pull and they’re better than Newcastle. Not saying he will leave for Liverpool but don’t be complacent.’
‘We said the same about Elanga and Gibbs White but you never know when another club with more resource comes calling.’
‘If Liverpool want Isak they will get him. It’s as simple as that pal.’
‘Newcastle have sold their sole for quick success.’
‘The Media tried to get Isak to Arsenal happening. Now it’s Isak to Liverpool….honestly lol!’
‘Isak would be missed a lot at Newcastle.
Nunez missed a lot at Liverpool.’
‘When are other clubs going to realise Ashley has gone and we’re not a selling club anymore.’
‘Shock horror Champions League club Newcastle want more than one good striker!!!’
‘Isak is going nowhere, Ekiteke is Callum Wilson replacement.
The end.’
‘So Ekitike is being signed as a backup? For £70m.’
‘Partner / rotation. We only have one striker in our entire squad for goodness sake!’
‘I doubt Isak will go anywhere. But Liverpool do have a right to probe their interest. And Newcastle have a right to say no.’
‘I agree newcastles issues are not up front but squad depth is needed now in Europe plus they got pretty lucky last time out with injuries , I’d be signing defenders as Dan Burn is just not top premier league level his England performances have shown his weaknesses.’
‘Maybe you should judge BDB on his Premier League performances? They showed he is definitely top Premier League level, but I guess you have to watch the games to know that.’
