Whilst some players see international breaks merely as matches that add to an already packed schedule, others consider them an opportunity to gain the playing time with the national team that they are missing out on at club level. Such is certainly the case for Mika Godts (21).

Set to make his fourth consecutive start for Belgium against France this Monday, the Parisian winger has used the past few weeks to get back into the rhythm of competitive football. Because since his arrival at Paris Saint-Germain this summer, it’s hard to say that the former Ajax player has really been able to get a proper taste of it.

Having made six appearances (144 minutes of playing time) for his new club since the start of the season, Godts has so far been confined to a role as an exclusive substitute. But that’s no reason to dampen the Belgian’s ambitions; he sees himself following in the footsteps of his team-mate Désiré Doué (21).

“I need time,” he explained to the press on the sidelines of the match against Les Bleus. “I’ve only just arrived in Paris. It’s a very, very big club. I’m staying calm. I’m trying to learn from the best, to show plenty of confidence, and to give my very best. I know I’ll reach his level.”
