Mateus Fernandes could be the key in turning West Ham’s season into a positive one.

It was evident for much of the summer that the Portuguese U21 international was a key target for Graham Potter and Kyle Macaulay, with Fernandes showing last season for Southampton he could be a big player in the Premier League.

The deal to bring Fernandes to east London was done late in the window, amidst a dreadful opening 2 games for Potters side – so his arrival was somewhat muted amongst the turmoil.

Fernandes though has arrived and has already made an impact, with a clear improvement in performance and energy in the Nottingham Forest win, to breath belief back into the season following a poor start.

Although it is early days and we shouldn’t get carried away, there can be no denying that there is a player there with the potential to make a huge impact – and one that could well inspire our club to kick on and deliver a campaign far from one that was first feared.
