Ben Clark has agreed a long-term deal to remain Gateshead’s first-team coach. According to Sunderland Echo, the former Sunderland and Hartlepool United defender will continue as part of the National League club’s new-look coaching set-up.

Gateshead are working to appoint a new manager after Rob Elliot left earlier this week, and hope to name a successor in the coming week.

Clark served on Elliot’s staff during the second half of last season, when the Heed pulled off a miraculous escape from relegation to National League North. They had been 11 points adrift after a 15-game winless run.

He had been in talks over fresh terms in recent weeks, and agreement means he will be part of the coaching staff under a new manager when players return for pre-season next month.

Clark said the club means a great deal to him and he is eager for the new campaign. He spoke of enjoying day-to-day work on the training ground and the commitment shown on match days, and said the feel-good factor around the club and community makes him excited to be involved again next season.
