Ben Foster says Elland Road is 'scary' and recalls facing Leeds United

Former England goalkeeper Ben Foster says visiting Elland Road can be a scary experience for opponents of Leeds United.

“I hated going there because the atmosphere was scary. Honestly, Leeds genuinely was the best atmosphere when they’re popping right, and we played at a time when they were hostile to play. I used to just keep looking around, and I’m thinking I’m right close to it, I’m the nearest point. Outfield players can run away at least. I had to stand there and listen to it.” He told the Cycling GK podcast.

The Elland Road crowd has been in full voice this season, lifting Leeds to notable results against Liverpool and Chelsea, and they sit 13th in the home form table.

Nigel Martyn compared the Liverpool atmosphere to Champions League nights, while Daniel Farke eased pressure on his future with another point.

Those occasions also recalled Lucas Radebe’s famous strike against Spartak Moscow. Away from home there has been only one win, so Farke has to make Leeds tougher without that backing.

A far better second half in the defeat to Manchester City suggests he may have found an away template with a new 3-5-2. With Lukas Nmecha expected to be fit to return, Farke will be looking to keep recent momentum in London.
