Massimo Benassi has called Andrés Guardado a Deportivo legend, praising his loyalty after relegation and keeping open the possibility of a future role.

Guardado joined in 2007 as the last major Lendoiro signing, for just over five million euros from Atlas de Guadalajara, and became a fans’ favourite who stayed after 2011 to lead promotion.

“For Depor, Andrés Guardado is a legend. Fans will never forget that when the team went down, he stayed and came back up,” Benassi told Medio Centro.

Asked if Guardado could one day coach Depor, he said: “Right now we are delighted with our coach, but in football, never say never.” Guardado is assistant coach with Mexico.

On Javier Aguirre, now Valencia’s new head coach, Benassi added: “He has huge experience in Spain.” Aguirre is set to debut on 11 October against Racing de Santander.

A club delegation including vice president Michelle Clemente Escotet is in Mexico after a Miami stop for meetings aimed at strengthening ties and opening new commercial avenues. “We are delighted to be in Mexico, it is very important for us, and we will keep generating synergies,” he later told Medio Tiempo.
