Benfica have condemned referee Gustavo Correia after the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary board reprimanded him over his report from last season’s Famalicão v Benfica, finding it misrepresented director general Mário Branco’s behaviour.
In a statement, the club called it incomprehensible that Correia finished the season among the highest ranked officials despite alleged damage to the team, accused him of failing to tell the truth on and off the pitch, and said the confirmed findings require consequences proportionate to their gravity.
Scrutiny of the match delegate was also urged, with CCTV footage cited as contradicting elements of his report.
The case will feature on the agenda of an emergency meeting already requested with the federation’s board.
Failure to act would send the wrong signal for Portuguese football and for those who expect rigour, competence and credibility in refereeing.
