Benfica looked at Slavia Prague centre-back Stepán Chaloupek as a cheaper replacement for António Silva, but a move now appears unlikely.
Fabrizio Romano reported that initial contacts were made for the 23-year-old, amid interest from other European clubs.
Chaloupek was seen as an emerging option, with youth and room to develop after António Silva’s departure. He has already played four times for Slavia this season.
Last term he made 38 appearances, scored 10 goals and supplied two assists, and he featured for the Czech Republic at the 2026 World Cup.
Lazio also explored a deal, with reports in Italy saying they were prepared to offer 10 million euros plus add-ons.
However, Glorioso 1904 reports that Marco Silva assessed the defender and concluded he lacked the attributes required, so Chaloupek’s future is unlikely to be at Benfica.
