According to Glorioso 1904, Benfica-linked Groningen midfielder Stije Resink, 22, sustained a serious knee injury against Volendam.

He had put Groningen ahead before feeling pain early in the second half, then left on a stretcher as team-mates and supporters looked on anxiously.

Resink is on Benfica’s radar and was a January target, but Groningen refused to negotiate a winter exit. Interest from Benfica and other European clubs, including Ajax, had suggested he could make a summer move.

Head coach Dick Lukkien voiced concern over the severity of the issue and said the team felt the absence of their captain, with players visibly shaken after full time.

E. Vaessen described the situation as very sad, praising Resink as a top player and noting there was an expectation he would probably leave in the summer.

This season Resink has played 25 times for Groningen, 24 in the Eredivisie and one in the cup, totalling 2,180 minutes, with five goals and five assists. He is valued at seven million euros.
