Benfica are monitoring Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Equi Fernández for a summer midfield reinforcement, with the Argentine on a shortlist of targets. Bild reports the player is on their radar.

Formed at Boca Juniors, the Argentina under-17 international had a spell at Al-Qadisiyah before joining Leverkusen last summer in a €25 million deal. In 2025/26 he featured in 30 official matches for the German club, without establishing himself as an undisputed starter.

Fernández is close to turning 24 and is under contract with Leverkusen until 2030. A move could be considered if an attractive opportunity arises during this window.

For now, Benfica are only tracking the situation and there are no talks between the parties. No formal offer has been made. The SAD led by Rui Costa want to clarify the futures of several current squad members before pursuing a new midfielder.

Enzo Barrenechea’s continuity remains uncertain, as he is not among Marco Silva’s main options for next season and Benfica are open to negotiating a transfer.

Signed from Aston Villa for about €15 million, Barrenechea has made 43 official appearances and scored two goals. Manu’s status could also shape Benfica’s market approach, with any move for Equi Fernández likely to be decided only after those dossiers are resolved.
