Benfica are not ruling out acquiring the 16.38% Benfica SAD stake held by José António dos Santos, known as Rei dos Frangos. According to Eco, the topic has gained traction after the club blocked a proposed sale to US fund Entrepreneur Equity Partners.
The aborted deal concerned 3,767,400 shares at around 12 euros per share. Benfica SAD halted the transaction under club statutes, preventing the entry of the fund linked to Tim Leiweke, the owner of Italian side Venezia, into the company’s capital.
Vice-president and finance chief Nuno Catarino has addressed a potential internal purchase. He said the shareholder’s valuation differs, which he respects and might even agree with, and he stressed any buy by the club would need to be at market prices.
Questions remain over a rapid resolution given the gap between the asking price and the market. Benfica SAD shares trade at 6.56 euros, a little over half of the initial 12 euros per share sought by the Grupo Valouro leader.
The board is maintaining financial prudence while studying options that do not compromise stability. The issue is set to remain live as the parties seek balanced terms that protect Benfica’s long‑term interests.
