Benfica’s recent trips to Moreirense have grown tricky, with four draws in six seasons at Moreira de Cónegos. Glorioso 1904 notes a trend they will want to reverse.
It was not always like this. Across the first 14 visits, Benfica dropped points only once, a 1-1 draw in the Taça da Liga in December 2012. In the league, their away record remained unblemished until 14 February 2021.
Moreirense finally held them at home in the top flight on that date. A 2-1 Benfica win on the opening weekend of the following season appeared to restore order, yet it preceded a new pattern, three straight draws in Moreira de Cónegos from 2022 to 2024.
The run began on 17 December 2022 with another 1-1 in the Taça da Liga group stage. Then in Liga 2, Moreirense earned the point and progressed to the quarter-finals. Back in the top tier in 2023-24, Rui Borges’s side held a 0-0 on 3 December against the then champions in round 12.
On 30 August 2024, Lawrence Ofori struck on 84 minutes via a ricochet and the hosts’ first home win over Benfica briefly loomed. Marcos Leonardo levelled from the spot at 90+8, sparing defeat. The equaliser did not stop dropped points, nor Roger Schmidt’s subsequent exit as head coach.
