Porto’s defeat to Casa Pia in Rio Maior has slightly improved Benfica’s prospects of a 39th Campeonato Nacional.
According to Glorioso 1904, after Benfica’s draw in Tondela the gap looked set to be 12, but the first league loss for Francesco Farioli’s side cut it to nine with 14 rounds remaining.
For the title to remain viable, the team led by José Mourinho would need to win every remaining match, a sequence that would take them to 86 points.
Benfica also depend on other results. They require Sporting to beat Porto, victories in their own head-to-heads with both clubs, and potential slips by Sporting and Porto against Braga, a demanding but theoretically possible combination given the fixture lists.
The task is still fraught. Benfica are unbeaten in the league, yet have not gone beyond three wins in a row this season.
Their next outing is against Alverca on Sunday, 8 February, at 20:30 at the Estádio da Luz, in the 21st round of the Liga Portugal Betclic.
