Benfica are still owed 11 million euros by Botafogo for Arthur Cabral’s transfer, one year after the move. Record writes that the debt is to be renegotiated between the clubs on new terms, including deadlines and interest.
Cabral left Benfica on 9 June 2025 in a deal worth 12 million euros fixed, with a further 3 million in potential add-ons. The full amount has not yet been paid.
The Rio de Janeiro club’s SAF debt, controlled by the American businessman, became public days ago amid a court-supervised recovery process. Court-ordered documents list Benfica among the main creditors, the second-largest foreign creditor behind Nottingham Forest.
Benfica remain alert, as Botafogo have not yet formally defaulted. There is an expectation this will happen, which would force the clubs to renegotiate the debt.
Cabral is also owed 270,000 euros by Botafogo. Signed by Benfica in 2023 for 20 million euros to replace Gonçalo Ramos, he struggled to secure a starting role and left last summer after scoring 18 goals in 77 games.
