Benfica have made an offer for Taylor Harwood-Bellis as they look to strengthen at centre-back. The club are prepared to go as high as €20m and do not plan to raise that cap, according to A Bola.

With talks for Josip Sutalo appearing close to collapse, Benfica have opened discussions with Southampton over the 24-year-old England international.

The deal is not expected to be straightforward. Southampton signed Harwood-Bellis from Manchester City in the summer of 2024 for €23.5m, so are unlikely to accept a fee below their investment.

Even so, dialogue remains open between the clubs, with a potential structure being explored that could persuade the Premier League side.

Harwood-Bellis is noted for his aggression and ability to play out from the back. His profile appeals particularly to Marco Silva, who knows him well from their time in the Premier League.

The Benfica hierarchy also approve and have moved decisively, while keeping alternative targets identified for the role. Shoring up the defence is a priority following the departure of António Silva.
