Benfica have opted to keep João Rego with the first-team squad at the start of pre-season, giving Marco Silva the chance to assess the highly rated Seixal midfielder.

O JOGO reports the decision has already been made by the hierarchy led by Rui Costa. Despite several enquiries in recent months about the 21-year-old attacking midfielder, the club remain convinced of his qualities and plan to let him impress in pre-season before any decision on his future.

Rego heads into summer on the back of a strong Portugal Under-21 campaign. At the Toulon Tournament he scored five goals, finishing as top scorer and being named the competition’s best player.

Benfica also underlined their belief earlier this year by renewing his contract until June 2030.

Last season he split his minutes between the B team and the Youth League amid fierce competition for senior places. As Silva begins his tenure and roles are still to be defined, Rego now has an opportunity to show he is ready to earn a spot with the first team.
